Before leaving Sridham Mayapura I visited the Bhaktivedanta Academy, one of several schools in our ISKCON community there. It functions as a traditional Vedic gurukula with education for both boys and girls. The day I visited the boy’s school they were receiving one of their teacher’s, Bhaktividya Purna Maharaja, who was returning from a trip way. The boys cooked a feast, received Maharaja, held a fire yajna and had a big kirtan. The jungle setting, the traditional architecture and the well trained students all provided a unique experience. Govardhan Eco Village, situated in the Sahyadri mountains near Mumbai, is a model ISKCON farming community and retreat center. Yesterday my festival team and I took a break from our preaching and visited the community. We were treated to a 4-hour tour of the 75 acres, which include a beautiful temple, a gurukula, a center for Vaisnava studies, an Ayurvedic treatment center, a gosala for cows and a retreat center for learning yoga. Most of the food devotees eat is grown on the farm. A herd of healthy cows provide plenty of milk. All buildings and houses are built with mud-bricks made by the devotees. With much construction going on, they produce over 1,000 bricks a day. The project has received numerous awards from the Indian government for their contributions to ecology. We were deeply impressed by the entire project which serves as a true testament to simple living and high thinking. To learn more about Govardhan Eco Village please visit: www.ecovillage.org.in

he Radha Vrindavan Chandra Temple in Pune, India is situated on 6 acres of land just minutes from the center of the city. They have a congregation of over 2,000 members. 200 brahmacaris live permanently in the temple and construction is going on to eventually accommodate 100 families on the property. There is also a large gurukula on site. My festival group is in Pune to perform our drama, ’Usa and Aniruddha’ in a prestigious hall this evening. Taking advantage, I visited the temple this morning with Bada Haridas prabhu.I held an initiation and then we toured the temple grounds. The gardens and lawns are being developed nicely and beautiful relief panels depicting Krsna pastimes decorate the parikrama path around the deities in the main temple. There is a second temple with a deity of Balaji as well. One can’t help but be amazed at the magnitude of the project. To know more please visit: http: www.iskconpune.com

Kayla Mueller, who was recently killed while being held by the terrorist organization ISIS in Syria, spent 6 months as a volunteer worker in the Sandipani Muni school in Vrindavan in 2010. She was loved by both the teachers and the students. Please visit the following site to read a tribute about her service in Vrindavan: http://goo.gl/vR8VVG

Yesterday I went to a rough part of Mumbai to pick up a puja plate I had repaired in an old junk shop. Several ethnic groups live side by side in a tense neighborhood surrounded by poverty and filth. To my surprise I found Lord Jagannatha and Lord Balarama sitting in the midst of it all. Lord Jagannatha sat content with His beaming smile and benevolent face. All glories to the all-merciful Lord of the universe.

“If anyone thinks of Me, when in sound mind and body, as the very cause and all pervading personality of this universe and as one without birth, then I assure you that I will remember this devotee of Mine when upon his deathbed, lying helplessly like a stone or a log of wood. I will personally take this devotee to the Supreme Abode.” [ Varaha Purana – Sri Varahadeva Charama Sloka ]

This morning, just after mangala arotika in Sridham Mayapura, Mother Manorupa dasi left this world for the supreme abode. Her two sons, Sri Nama Vanamali das and Sri Paramahamsa Gaura das were by her side loudly chanting the holy names. Such an auspicious departure. Her husband, Prahlada Nrsimha das is now arranging for the funeral ceremony. Devotees knew her as the perfect disciple, the perfect wife and the perfect mother.

Our 6 week festival tour in the Mumbai area is finally coming to a conclusion. Yesterday, while doing some errands, I took photos of life in the city, comparing old India with that of the new.

The famous temple of Trimbakeshwar is situated 25 kilometers from the city of Nashik, in the state Maharashtra. Inside the ancient temple is one of the 12 famous Jyotirlingas, self manifested deities of Lord Siva, found in India. It has been a place of pilgrimage since time immemorial. The Pandavas stayed there for sometime during their exile and Lord Caitanya visited the temple during His tour of South India. While there He bathed in Kusa-varta, a small kunda which is formed from the waters of the Godavari, considered one of India’s most sacred rivers. By the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada we were also able to visit this holy place. While in the temple I prayed to Lord Siva to be kind and grant me eternal residence in Sri Vrindavan Dhama.

Nashik was the abode of Lord Rama during His 14 years in exile and one of the most popular places of pilgrimage in present day India. The beautiful Pancavati forest once covered the entire area. Nashik is located on the banks of the sacred Godavari river and is one of 4 cities where the famous Kumbh Mela is held yearly. Our festival team spent the entire day visiting many of the holy places mentioned in the Ramayana. We saw the spot where Laksman cut off the nose of the evil rakshasi, Surpanakha. We visited the exact place where Ravana stole the Goddess of Fortune, Sita devi. We saw where Lord Rama killed Marici, who was disguised as a golden deer. And finally we took bath in the ghat where Lord Rama bathed daily in the Godavari river. It was a most fitting ending to our 6 week festival tour in Maharashtra.

A very talented, devotional and much loved devotee, Rasika nam dasa, has left this world, apparently from a heart attack suffered while leading kirtan on harinam. The following is a beautiful video of how he came to Krsna consciousness. His short life was testament to the power of the holy names. The world is a touch darker now that this bright light in Lord Caitanya’s movement has left us.

Tomorrow I am leaving Vrindavan. I have been fortunate to have spent much of the past 5 months in this transcendental abode. Today I went out to Radha Kunda to offer prayers of gratitude and ask blessings for my forthcoming preaching in the west. I also requested mercy to be able to return to Vrindavan again and again. I am forever indebted to Srila Prabupada for introducing me to the land of Krsna.
